Your answer is marked point by point against the marking guide for that question — the way an examiner would — showing the marks you earned, the marks you lost, and what a full-mark answer would have added. This page explains exactly how, and where the limits are.
1. The question is matched to its criteria. Short-answer and extended-response questions are marked against the mark allocation and the marking points an examiner would use for that question type in that study. Essays are marked against the study's published assessment criteria — for example the criteria for an English analytical response, or a Legal Studies extended response.
2. Your answer is read against each mark. The marker works through the marking points one at a time and decides, with reasons tied to your actual words, whether each was met. It quotes the sentence where you earned a mark, and the place where a mark was available but not taken.
3. You get the gap, not just the grade. For every mark you lost, you get a plain description of what was missing and what a full-mark answer would have said — the mechanism you didn't name, the link back to the question you didn't make, the piece of evidence you didn't use.
4. The pattern is tracked over time. The marking points you miss are stored across every subject. When the same kind of mistake shows up repeatedly — losing the link to the question, describing instead of analysing, running out of evidence — the app tells you, and your next practice questions are pulled toward it.
It means the answer is judged against a marking guide, criterion by criterion, with a mark for each point and a reason for it — the same structure a marker uses, instead of a vague "good effort, add more detail".
It does not mean a real VCAA examiner has seen your work, and it is not an official mark. The marking is produced by an AI language model. Like any marker working from a guide, it can be too generous or too harsh on a borderline point, and it can misread an answer. Treat the score as a well-reasoned second opinion, not a verdict.
The whole point of showing you a criterion-by-criterion breakdown is that you can check it. When a SAC or practice exam comes back from your teacher:
Your teacher's mark is the one that counts. This is a tool for the months of practice in between, when no one else is marking your work.
